Dog AID Policy on Dogs Pulling Wheelchairs or Other Loads

Wheelchairs

In America it is allowable for Assistance Dogs to pull wheelchairs. In Britain the law states that a dog must not be used to pull any load including wheelchairs on the public highway.

Other Loads

It is important to be aware of the strain on the dog's skeleton in any task that the dog performs to assist his owner, particularly helping owners to move from sitting to standing. Consideration needs to be given whether or not the individual dog is capable of performing this task. Also if the owner has a fall, care needs to be taken that undue weight is not put on the dog's skeleton. Therefore clearance must be given from the vet for either of these tasks. The dog should also be checked for ability to continue with these tasks at least every six months; more often if possible.
